ADHD coaching and CBT for children
An ADHD coach is a trained professional who helps you come up with ways to handle the responsibilities and activities made harder by your ADHD symptoms.
Coaching is a tool you can use with medications and other ADHD treatments to help you get organized and reach your goals.
CBT for Children- CBT is aimed at helping the child learn to express and control anger in more appropriate ways. Cognitive-behavioral therapy aims to reshape the child's thinking (cognition) to improve problem solving skills, anger management, moral reasoning skills, and impulse control.
Relaxation techniques - because the body is conditioned to respond in a heightened state of avoidance or escape (fight or flight) to external situations that are perceived as threatening or fearful, children are taught relaxation techniques to calm this response.
Cognitive restructuring - The child or adolescent learns new ways to deal with feared situations by investigating, uncovering and challenging anxiety-provoking thoughts.
Problem solving - A child is taught to identify real life problems, then to list and evaluate actions for resolving a specific problem.
Family therapy- It may be used to help improve family interactions and communication among family members.
Cognitive problem-solving training. This type of therapy is aimed at helping your child identify and change thought patterns that lead to behavior problems. Collaborative problem-solving- in which you and your child work together to come up with solutions that work for both of you.
Both ADHD Coaching and CBT focus on practical ways to deal with everyday tasks that might be tougher because of ADHD. The topics of these sessions include:
1. GOAL SETTING
Help individuals identify goals and break them into achievable chunks to allow individuals to see the discrepancy between Where They Are and Where They Should Be
2. PROCRASTINATION
Identify what keeps individuals stuck (whether in their head or in the environment) and help change their perspective and have small, achievable goals
3. TIME MANAGEMENT
• Estimate how long a task will take and learn to prioritize important tasks
• Strike a healthy balance between academics/work and fun activities and improve time management
4. ORGANISATION
Assess and reorganise an individual's physical environment so it fits their needs. This will encourage teenagers to view workspaces at home and at school/work, how to manage and upkeep of their spaces.
5. MOTIVATION, SELF-ADVOCACY
• Developing confidence to seek help from their teachers, peers, family or other adult resources.
• Learn how to persevere and endure difficult academic and social-emotional situations.
6. PARENT TRAINING
• Develop awareness of how teenagers develop emotionally, cognitively, behaviourally and emotionally so parents can provide appropriate support and help.
• Allow parents an opportunity to express specific areas of concern and needs.
7. SENSORY INTEGRATION
Child will learn how to become aware of their sensory needs and be taught specific strategies and tools so their bodies and minds are in the best possible state for learning.
✨ Practical support to help children thrive at home, in school, and with friends.
